Kayaking Florida Tours & Destinations

Whether you're seeking a challenge and a chance to test your kayaking skills or just looking to see Florida from another perspective, there are tons of opportunities to do so. Engaging in a respected kayak tour is a good way to see what Florida has to supply.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is a fashionable destination for many prepared kayak tours. A Day Away Outfitters provide several tours based in the refuge.
Manatee Encounter: kayaking with this beloved Florida resident and endangered species can be a fun and enlightening experienced. The tour lasts two hours and manatee sightings are guaranteed from April to October.
Difficulty rating is easy.
Birding Tour: This 90 minute kayaking tour gives paddlers the chance to see some of Florida's migratory and native birds. Spoonbills, herons, egrets and more call the refuge home. Awkwardness rating is easy.
Jet Night/Cold Light Bioluminescent Night Tour: This isn't a refuge tour but it is strongly advised. In the summer, the waters of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon illuminate thanks to bioluminescence. Every movement produces light. Manatees glow, sting rays look like something out of something out of science fiction movies and fast moving little fish seem as if glow-in-the-dark rockets. The tour lasts 2 1/2 hours. Bioluminescence is guaranteed June through September. Trouble rating is easy. Kayakers can truly see Florida in a whole new light.
Big Bend Saltwater Paddling Trail
This popular sea kayaking destination in Florida is one of the longest and wildest authoritatively owned wetlands in the US. The 105 mile trail features a big variety of marine and bird life. White pelicans, egrets, bald eagles and ospreys inhabit the area. In the water, kayakers are likely to see crabs, fish, sea turtles, manatee, cannonball jelly fish, small sharks and rays.
Six designated camping areas are spread out over the trail. Camping permits are required and guide books are obtainable. The trail is open from September 1 to June 30th.
Blue Cypress Lake
Club kayak details several available Florida kayak routes and tours. Blue Cypress Lake is one of them. Freshwater kayaking at Florida's Blue Cypress Lake needs moderate kayaking skills. Round trip from Middleton's Fish Camp to Moonshine Bay is 7 miles.
The lake incorporates largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and blue gill in addition to other fish species. Cypress trees, often overflowing with osprey, surround the launch area. Available side trips include exploring the cypress swamp, complete with subtropical ferns, mosquitoes and alligators.
Weeki Wachee River
Also detailed by Club kayak is Weeki Wachee, a Florida spring discharging over 64 million gallons of water daily. Kayaking this Florida waterway, paddlers are likely to see manatee, alligators, raccoons, otters and a selection of birds. Often-sighted birds comprise ducks, ibis, pelicans, herons, osprey, wood storks and cormorants. Eight miles along, the Weeki Wachee meets the Gulf of Mexico.
Trouble rating is beginner to advanced and distance ranges from 4 to 16 miles.
Kayaking options in Florida range from freshwater to saltwater and from calm water to rushing water. Kayaking tours are a fantastic way to endeavor out new waterways. State parks and kayaking trails are another alternative.

How to snorkel la jolla

Snorkeling in La Jolla, California, is an inexpensive way to enjoy the Southern California coast. The La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, located about 15 minutes from downtown San Diego, was designated in 1970 and includes 6,000 acres of ocean bottom and intertidal zone. Snorkelers exploring the waters of La Jolla have the opportunity to swim alongside leopard sharks, sea lions and bright orange garibaldi. Because of coastal geography, the waters of La Jolla are typically calmer than surrounding areas. Water temperature varies from the mid 50s during the winter to the 70s in the summer months.

Instructions

1) Choose between hiring a certified guide to show you around the La Jolla Underwater Park or renting your own snorkeling gear. You may also rent a sit-on-top kayak to avoid swimming long distances.

2) Swim--or paddle if you have rented a kayak--from the beach at the south end of La Jolla Shores past the surf line. By continuing past the surf line you will enter clear water and may view rays and an occasional leopard shark in this area.

3) Follow the coastline south to a shallow sandy area in front of a large white house. During the summer months, leopard sharks, which are harmless to humans, breed in this area.

4) Float calmly and wait for schools of leopard sharks to swim near you. If you dive down to get a better look, they will usually swim off.

5) Swim--or paddle your kayak--farther south toward the Seven Caves near La Jolla Cove. In the waters near the Seven Caves you will see gariibaldi, calico bass and sea lions

Kayak Gear For the Beginner

Kayaking is an extremely fun recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you've rented a kayak and already tried your first paddle or are just starting out, knowing what basic gear to have will make you more comfortable and prepared.
Basic Kayaking Gear

  • If you own a kayak you will of course need a paddle. If you are in a solo kayak you only need one double ended paddle. They come in many different sizes and materials but most beginners will start with the most inexpensive paddle which will work just fine. If you progress to the level of kayaking weekly then you may want to invest in a higher end paddle.

  • Next and very importantly you will need a PFD (personal flotation device), otherwise known as a lifejacket. It is mandatory to wear a lifejacket for any type of boating and kayaking is no different. Get a lifejacket that is comfortable for your shape and size and that does not rub or irritate your skin while paddling.

If you are doing whitewater kayaking it is mandatory to wear a helmet. If you are kayaking in lakes or a calm ocean then a helmet is not necessary.

  • Having the proper clothes will make a big different in your comfort level. If it is really hot out and you are recreational kayaking then you may choose to kayak in your bathing suit (with your lifejacket). For cooler weather however a moisture wicking shirt as a base layer and then insulation on top as well as a waterproof jacket and pants will go a very long way in keeping you warm and dry.

  • In the summer when recreational kayaking any type of sport sandal or water shoe will work fine. If you are whitewater kayaking or kayaking in cooler weather then I would highly suggest investing in a good pair of water booties. Wet feet can equal cold feet and that is no fun.

If you are sea kayaking you may need a sprayskirt for your kayak. A sprayskirt will keep the water out of your kayak and therefore keep you dry. If you are kayaking through waves and ocean surf, a sprayskirt will be a much needed accessory.

Additional Accessories that May be Needed Besides the most important gear listed above, you may also want to have a dry bag aboard your kayak. A drybag will allow you to store your essentials like car keys, sunglasses, food, extra clothes, etc. It will keep them completely dry even if your kayak should overturn. A small drybag is extremely inexpensive and a very useful kayak accessory.
The last thing you may want to consider is a safety kit. Most kayak stores will offer some type of safety kit with first aid materials as well as possible rescue equipment. Although we all hope we will never have to use this, realistically it is smart to have one stored within the drybag and along for the ride. Whether you are brand new to kayaking or an experienced paddler, it is always important to be prepared for emergency situations.
For most recreational kayakers, there is very little necessary kayak gear that is needed. Starting off with these few essentials will provide for an enjoyable paddling experience and hopefully many years of paddling fun.

More Than Kayaking and Fishing - Things to Do When Visiting the Baja Peninsula

Everyone needs a super vacation getaway at some point in time. If it has been awhile since you have had any vacation at all, or if you are tired of going to the same old places to do the same old things, a Baja kayak trip will be the vacation trip of your entire lifetime.

Mexico's Baja Peninsula is quickly becoming one of the favored vacation destinations. One reason for this is both the location itself and everything that is offered in it is much different from the travel spots and vacations most Americans are familiar with. People are deciding that they want to try something new -- and there is plenty to experience on a Baja kayak trip.

A vacation at the Baja Peninsula has much to offer to you. If words like adventure and exploring are included in your definition of a fun vacation, a Baja kayak trip will certainly appeal to you.

There may not be any geographical location as beautiful as this new vacation spot. It is simply chock-full of all of the beauty that nature has created. From the scenic wilderness to the impressive sea to the animal life forms, you will find it to be a wonderland overflowing with treats to view and photograph.

Your trip will be as exciting as you want it to be. There is something about participating in a whale watch, snorkeling, and fishing in this lovely warm climate that will make every moment of your vacation truly memorable.

Whether you want a thrilling vacation experience where there is never a moment without excitement and activity, or whether you want to blend your vacation nicely between adventure and relaxation, your Baja kayak trip will give you the type of vacation you want.

It is possible that you may have never experienced the unique delight of a kayak. There is really nothing that can compare with its feel. While it is the best way to maneuver in such locations as around Mexico's Baja Peninsula, it is also an interesting experience in itself.

When you are ready for the trip of a lifetime, forget all of those other vacation spots and prepare yourself for a Baja kayak trip. Not only will you be able to enjoy a warm-climate paradise even in the middle of the winter, there is so much to see and do that it will make every other travel spot look dull in comparison.

Sea Kayaking: Rolling a Sea Kayak and Carving a Greenland Paddle

Sea kayaking enthusiasts looking to save money on their kayak paddles and interested in learning how to roll a sea kayak with less strain on their joints do well to carve a Greenland paddle.

The job is not that difficult and is not beyond the abilities of the average hand tool user. There are a number of resources to turn to, including Charles Holst's free and downloadable pdf file on Greenland paddle
carving and Brian Nystrom's comprehensive self-published book.

Brian's book includes detailed photographs that cover building a Greenland paddle, from choosing a cedar blank to modifying the design to finishing the paddle with tung oil, fiberglass and epoxy.

Another helpful resource is web designer Matt Johnson's video on the process. He's made it widely available on the web in both long and short versions. If you're interested in carving your own Greenland paddle for sea kayaking (or kayak fishing, for that matter), Matt has since stored on YouTube an eight minute clip from his useful video.

He shot the video with a digital video camera. Matt mentions but mumbles Chuck Holst's valuable and free pdf, which gives specs on how to carve from a blank, including how to make the first crucial rough cuts.

Due to youtube storage and compression issues, the video quality is a little herky jerky, but not too distracting, and the sound is somewhat out sync with the video, sort of like a dubbed action film, but still you get the point.

In the segment Matt describes some of the tools you'll need to make your own Greenland paddle, and how to choose a good piece of cedar. His full scale version of the video, available in two files sizes, is smoother and cleaner, but takes a while to download.

Matt's video is already widely known and has been heavily viewed through a number of outlets, including his own website. Carving a Greenland sea kayaking paddle is a lot easier than you might think. And using a
Greenland paddle for sea kayaking, including how to roll a sea kayak, can be an eye-opening experience. Nice about the paddles is that since they are wood, they are re-shapeable. Paddle your first one for a season, discover it's too long or too thick at the blades or the shoulder, and all you have to do is take a sander and reshape, applytung oil, and you've got a new paddle.

Also a Greenland sea kayaking paddle can be reinforced in crucial spots such as the tips and the blade edges with fiberglass, plastic inlay, or thin strips of oak. Greenland paddles are handy and fast once you get used to them. And they create less stress and strain on the wrists, elbows and shoulders because of their softer feel and tendency to flex at the shaft and blade.

Finally, many sea kayaking enthusiasts find Greenland paddles easier for rolling and bracing. Because the four paddle sides are symmetrical and identical, you don't need to twist your wrist so much to present the power face to the surface of the water.

Sea Kayaking, Kayak Fishing Cape Cod: Minimoy and Monomoy Islands at Chatham

Launch Your Kayak into These Warm Waters for Good Birding, Sea Kayaking, Kayak Fishing

Monomoy Island off Chatham, Massachusetts (Cape Cod) is a worthwhile destination for any New England sea kayaking or kayak fishing enthusiast who has strong kayak navigation skills, savvy in fog and quality saltwater fishing gear.
The waters of the islands and nearby Nantucket Sound, off Chatham, are filled with challenges: shifting channels, sandbars, frequent fogs and a prevailing southwesterly wind that kicks up lively chop during the summer.

The area is also home to a large gray seal population and numerous species of migratory sea and shorebirds, making the area a likewise fine area for birdwatching during the spring and fall migrations.
Recently grey seals, some in excess of 550 pounds, have taken up residence on the shores of South Monomoy Island, having abandoned the inner channels of the Southway, at North Monomoy Island, after a late autumn gale shifted the sands of Chatham's South Beach to the southwest. Great white sharks frequent the area, sometimes feeding on the seals.

Monomoy's watery environs are also seasonal feeding grounds for numerous migratory fish: striped bass (stripers), bonito, bluefish, bluefin tuna and other pelagic sport fish that settle in to feed in the area's warm summer waters after arriving via the Gulf Stream.

The Monomoy Islands have a tortuous geomorphic history, like most of Cape Cod, including Billingsgate Island and Shoals, the Peaked Hill Bar off Provincetown and the barrier beaches of Chatham's Nauset Beach.
Once a lengthy spit attached to the mainland, the peninsula split off from the mainland, was broken in half, and two islands, reaching toward Nantucket and close to the Pollock Rip, Stone Horse and Handkerchief Shoals familiar to saltwater fishing enthusiasts.

The two islands have since become three islands: nascent Minimoy Island, forming in the sandflats on the northwestern side of North Monomoy, off Morris Island and Hardings Beach, gains increased viability every year.
It has since been protected by signage and buttressed by snow fencing brought in the National Fish and Wildlife Service unit that overlooks the refuge from the bluffs of nearby Morris Island.

Most recently, South Monomoy Island reattached itself, indirectly to the mainland at Chatham, by way of a land bridge formed by a heavy gale.
One can now walk barrier South Beach from Chatham to South Monomoy. That outlying beach, likewise, attached itself to the mainland about twenty years ago.

To launch a kayak to go sea kayaking or kayak fishing in the area, try the shores of Hardings Beach in the off season. Likewise during offseason you can launch from the boat ramp at the Chatham Harbormaster's shack. Mid-summer visitors in kayaks will do best to launch from Morris Island, where limited parking is available an a hand-carry of about 100 yards is required. Bring plenty of bug repellent if you plan on returning to your car near dusk or after sundown.

The following is how the tour will run if you are in the northbound group. If you happen to be in the southbound group then your tour with begin and end in Queenstown instead of Christchurch.

The Start of Your Tour

The first day of your tour will start on a Monday. On this day you will need to be in Christchurch by 10 a.m. to be picked up by Active New Zealand. kayak tours in chicago

  • Kayaking may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Chicago, but the city's proximity to Lake Michigan and several rivers makes it an ideal place to go kayaking. Several companies in the Chicago area offer guided and self-guided kayak tours that allow people to see the city in a unique and exciting way.

  • Classic Tour

  • Offered by several tour companies, the classic Chicago tour is a guided experience that will emphasize historical aspects of the city, while providing background information on some of Chicago's most notable landmarks. For instance, kayak tourists will learn how the Sears Tower is actually four buildings in one and also which landmark building contains floors that are uneven, causing pencils to roll across tables.

The tour follows the same water routes taken by explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet in 1673. Most Chicago kayak tour companies include a kayak in the price of the tour, but do allow visitors to bring their own kayak, as long as it is at least 12 feet long.

  • Architectural Tour

  • Chicago architectural tours offer tourists the opportunity to paddle the Chicago River loop, which meanders through canyons created by the city's skyscrapers. This tour also offers historical information about Chicago's storied past, including Al Capone's hideout and where the first settlers lived.

As with most kayak tours in the area, visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and to wear lightweight synthetic material. Sunblock, sunglasses and a hat are also recommended for daytime tours. Cameras are allowed but are likely to get wet, as are the tourists, so bring a waterproof bag. Kayak tour companies reserves the right to cancel any tour if there is inclimate weather, but will gladly reschedule the tour for a future date.

  • Fireworks Tour

  • Obviously, this tour is held at night and allows visitors to paddle through downtown Chicago to Navy Pier, where they will enjoy a spectacular fireworks show. This tour is offered during the late spring, summer and early fall months on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Ghosts and Gangsters

  • Wateriders, a Chicago-based tour company, advertises a unique kayak tour that travels the Chicago River in pursuit of lakefront sites believed to be haunted. Tourists will learn how Chicago newspapers helped create the city's infamous reputation for mayhem and violence. The company has slapped a PG-13 rating on this tour because of its mature theme and recommends children not take the tour.

  • Wildlife Tour

  • Wildlife kayak tours are offered at Skokie Lagoons, located 20 miles north of Chicago. Tours along this waterway make frequent stops to observe the region's wildlife, including deer, turtles and heron.

    kayaking in the old town

The Old Town kayaks have lots of room in the comfortable cockpits and also lots of storage with a twist lock system for the hatch that stops most of the leaks. The seats and feet rests can adjust to your preference, and you have a glove box, cup holder and an open cockpit control panel. There is also an anchor system and rod holders for those that like to fish. You can kit your Old Town kayak with what ever you want.

The tandem Old Town has the best stable maneuverability.

The mechanics of the Old Town kayaks make them the leaders with the upmost state of the art materials used in their making. Using a polylink three layered material which comprises of; outside linear layer
    foam coreinside linear layer

This is a patented product and therefore does a great job insulating the kayak aswell as having a built in floatation system.

There are many different series in the Old Town Kayaks, it all depends on what you want your boat for. They track well so you would want to go for the Loon series that are good for exploring lakes and rivers.

If you want more of a day trip or tour of some sort then you would go for a Castine or the Nantucket series. These boats are longer and have more storage space.

For the more recreational sort of day trip then you may want to consider a Casco or Otter series.

Finally for all those fishermen and hunters, then the new Predator series are for you. They are kitted out especially for hunters and fishermen. They are small stable and light weight so you can easily put it on top of your carThe conclusion of this is that what ever series you choose in the Old Town kayak range, you will not be disapointed. With the vast amount of accessories that you can add to your kayak They are trully the leaders.

Having stability, resilience, very rigid, light weight, insulated and have long life, what more could you want in a kayak.

    Kayak fishing is catching on

My first fishing kayak was an Old Town Loon, a sit-inside that was so stable that with a bit of practice (and several dunkings), I  could stand in the cockpit to fly cast.

perception vs. old town kayaks?perception acadia or old town loon? what’s the better kayak and why? any other suggestions for a recreational kayak around 13′ for use in lakes? there is no way for us to tell you what is best for you. we don’t know your skills, but they are both good kayaks.

    Old Town Adventure

The Old Town Adventure XL 160 Kayak with rudder has the stability that beginning boaters need and a long profile to make paddling effortless on extended trips. The rudder is a great help too for direction.

    How we choose holiday provider

A little local knowledge goes a long way. It turns a good holiday into a truly memorable one. We choose tour operators with a deep connection with special places - people who live and work in the destination and who have fallen in love with it.

So travelling with them is not just a brief stay somewhere, it's a real connection with the people, the landscape, the culture and the environment. It's like really living somewhere and enjoying the peace and quiet or the pace and excitement of the place as much as the people who live there do.

    Kayak Tour Santa Cruz Island

California's Channel Islands, located just off the coast of Santa Barbara and Ventura, are a National Park dream-come-true for marine nature lovers.

The crystal clear Pacific channel waters, many mysterious and eerie sea caves, breathtaking cliffs, abundant wildlife, and mild weather combine to lure expert kayakers and novices alike to explore their natural wonders. Each encounter with the caves, tunnels, arches, grottos, and blow holes is a unique blend of sights and sounds created by submarine fissures and openings, and the contorted volcanic island formations. And the sheltered paddling areas very often are without surf or strong winds.

Marine mammals such as dolphins, whales, seals, and sea lions abound. And for many species of sea birds, the pristine habitat offers a rare respite from human development. On Santa Cruz Island, historic ranch buildings provide a window into California's past.

Aquasports runs kayaking trips to Santa Cruz Island, Anacapa Island, and Santa Barbara Island.

    kayak fishing

Kayaks used for fishing are different than kayaks used for whitewater rafting, in that they are usually SOT (sit on top) kayaks, as well as typically wider than whitewater kayaks. They often have much larger below-deck cargo areas for easier storage of your fishing gear; some even provide waterproof storage via internal bulkheads. Unlike traditional one-paddler whitewater kayaks, many fishing kayaks can accommodate two or three paddlers.

While you may be tempted to immediately rush out and buy a kayak, it's probably a good idea to test the waters by taking a class on kayak fishing, or hiring an outfitter for guided kayak-fishing trips. While kayaks are inexpensive when compared to motorized boats, it can still be a several hundred dollar investment. It's good to know you would actually enjoy kayak fishing before you make a purchase.

When you're ready to purchase a kayak, there are some things to look for when comparing kayaks:

    1. Make sure you'll be comfortable; look for a kayak with lots of leg-room, and make sure you pick a kayak with a weight capacity that will handle both you and your fishing gear.

    2. Make sure the kayak is easy to load and unload. You might want to also consider a folding kayak. If the kayak is easier to load you'll probably want to use it more often.

    3. Get advice from experts. Tell them what type of a fisherman (and woman) you are. This will help determine the type of kayak you should buy.

    Where to go Kayak Fishing?

There are so many great spots in the United States to go kayak fishing, but some of the best spots include:

    Everglades National Park - Florida

Considered by some to be one of the best kayak-fishing locations in the world, Everglades National Park offers excellent fishing year round for trout, redfish and snook, and is located just 30 minutes from Naples, or 90 minutes from Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale. With 1.4 million acres in the Park alone, and 10,000 islands surrounded by mangroves, mudflats and sandy beaches, you might never want to leave.

    La Jolla Shores - California

But, if you don't leave Everglades National Park, you'll never discover kayak fishing in La Jolla Shores outside of San Diego, which is known as the best location in Southern California for kayak fishing. You can fish for halibut, white sea bass, calico bass, yellowtail and barracuda, among others. Keep in mind that you pull your vehicle right onto the sand to unload your kayak, and that the area where you launch is an ecological preserve which prohibits fishing until you reach the buoy line, which is about a half to a mile out, so you will have some paddling to do before you begin to fish.

    East Matagorda Bay - Texas

Kayakers are welcomed at Matagorda Bay with their own kayak trails leading to great redfish and speckled trout fishing. No motorized boats allowed, which means kayakers have all that spectacular fishing all to themselves. East Matagorda Bay is located south of the town of Matagorda, toward the Gulf of Mexico.

To really make the most of your kayak-fishing adventure, you really should consider a kayak-fishing class or lessons with an experienced guide. Basic lessons will cover kayak safety, as well as launching and landing in surf. It can't be stressed enough that a lesson on kayak fishing may make the difference between a great day of fishing and a miserable time.

How this holiday makes a difference

    Community
Tourism is strictly regulated within the park to respect the special nature of Gwaii Haanas. For an area once highly dependent upon logging and commercial fishing, tourism provides much needed industry diversity, jobs, and income to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Logging continued in the area in the face of legal and political controversy until July of 1987, when Canada and British Columbia signed the South Moresby Memorandum of Understanding. The Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation signed the Gwaii Haanas Agreement in 1993. The Agreement expresses respect for both Canadian and Haida interests and designations, and includes a mutual commitment to the protect Gwaii Haanas.

Gwaii Haanas is cooperatively managed by the Archipelago Management Board (AMB), which is made up of an equal number of representatives from the Council of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada. The AMB is responsible for all aspects of planning, operation, and management of Gwaii Haanas. Each of the above itineraries visit Haida Heritage sites where guests will have a unique opportunity to experience the Haida history first hand.

    Environment
The company is strong advocate of local environmental groups that are calling for an end to salmon farming on BC’s west coast. Scientific evidence has proven that salmon farms generate sea lice that infest juvenile salmon stocks. To this end, $50 of every tour sold is be directed to Save our Salmon Marine Conservation Foundation. As a member of the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC, our kayak practices follow low impact guidelines that are based on "Leave No Trace" principles. As well, Gwaii Haanas Naitonal Park and Haida Heritage Site has strict guidelines for tour operators to follow and visitor quotas to ensure protection of the environment and a quality wilderness experience for all visitors.

When we encounter whales on our kayak trips we adhere to "Be Whale Wise" guidelines established by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. We provide all gear to minimize what guests need to bring or purchase for a once in a lifetime experience. This feature reduces the weight of customer luggage which saves fuel during their transport by water taxi to our camp. All recyclables are returned to Sandspit. Where local recycling facilities are not available, items are stored until the end of the season and returned to larger recycling facilities on Vancouver Island. The company’s kayak operation is a member of the Gwaii Haanas Tour Operators Association. Our environmental and educational practices also include:
    - Educating and adhering to ‘bear aware’ practices on all camping trips.
    - Providing water bottles and mugs to all guests.
    - Soliciting and acting upon client comments as how to improve our sustainable tourism practices.
